We hope these activities will continue to enhance collaboration and the quality of VCD education in Indonesia.
On Tuesday, March 19, 2024, VCD UPH invites Mr. Drajad Koncara in a seminar as an appreciation for the “hidden gems” of modern Indonesian comics. This event delved into the strength of national style, techniques for producing art in comic format, and the artistic values that still exist and deserve to be advocated for in competition with the imported comic industry.
Thank you, Mr. Drajad Koncara, for your time and opportunity to share your experiences and knowledge with all of us.
In September, Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) hosted students from Singapore Polytechnic to partner with UPH students in applying design thinking to find innovative solutions to address some lingering problems faced by villages and informal urban settlements in Jakarta. This initiative was executed under LeX, a program initiated by the Singapore Polytechnic International (SPI) and supported by the Asia-Ready Exposure Program (AEP) ― a youth development program by the National Youth Council (NYC) Singapore.
The program saw 30 students and three lecturers from SPI teaming up with 30 students and 13 lecturers from UPH School of Design (SoD) and Faculty of Science and Technology (FAST) to conduct social innovation design in Sukapura RW10 subdistrict, a poor riverbank community in North Jakarta, and Ciakar village in Tangerang regency on September 18-27, 2023.
With the support of the local communities, they devised innovative programs such as riverbank community development and clean river initiatives, tempeh-making workshop, outdoor sportswear and equipment sewing, village school, making natural detergent from fruit peels, and oyster mushroom and worm farming.
On the last day, the students held an exhibition in the form of a gallery walk to gather feedback from the UPH academic community, government officials, and the residents in the two locales. The solutions presented will have a positive impact on the local communities, and in the process, participating students were inspired to employ the knowledge and skills they learned at university to make a big difference in the world around them.

The Alumni Gathering, organized by UPH’s DKV program, successfully reconnected alumni with their former professors on September 9, 2023, at Bottega Ristorante in Jakarta. The event began with MCs Regina and Elsa, followed by welcoming speeches from Mrs. Lala and Mrs. Elis, creating a warm and inclusive atmosphere. ICE Breaking mini-games facilitated interaction among attendees, while alumni participated in tracer studies, providing valuable insights into their post-graduation experiences. The evening featured a communal dinner and randomly selected door prizes, adding excitement to the gathering. Former lecturers actively engaged in discussions, fostering knowledge sharing and networking, ultimately achieving the event’s goal of strengthening bonds between alumni and educators.
On Thursday, August 24, 2023, during the UPH Festival 2023 Faculty Talks event, one of our alumni, Katarina Monika, made an appearance. The name Katarina Monika has recently been widely discussed because her design work was chosen to be the logo for Indonesia’s 78th birthday.
On that afternoon, Katarina Monika, along with two other UPH alumni, shared her experiences as a designer after graduating. She also shared the things she learned and the values she applies in her work. In an event attended by prospective students of UPH’s visual communication design program, Katarina Monika’s presence provided inspiration and an overview of what graduates of UPH’s visual communication design program can achieve as leaders in the field of design, capable of creating transformative designs for society.
